性狀：結晶結晶性粉末。有二氧化硫氣味。干燥時穩定。對濕敏感。較結晶穩定，但久貯可氧化成硫酸鈉，加熱分解為硫酸鈉和硫化鈉。溶于水，溶于甘油，不溶于乙醇。水溶液呈堿性，pH約為9。半數致死量（大鼠，靜脈）115mg/kg。有刺激性。密度：2.633；熔點：500°C。
用途：生化研究。制亞硫酸纖維素酯、硫代硫酸鈉、有機化學藥品、漂白織物等, 還用作還原劑、防腐劑、去氯劑等
